Armoured products manufacturer SVI Engineering unveiled its new Tactical Observation Vehicle at the Tshwane-hosted biennial Africa Aerospace & Defence (AAD) expo on September 17.

Built on a Toyota Land Cruiser 79 Series platform, SVI’s Tactical Observation Vehicle employs an additional rear axle that can either be powered (for true 6 X 6 capability) or unpowered (6 X 4) to accommodate the enlarged rear observation platform.

Serving as a command-and-control centre, the tactical observation platform comes fitted with the Bushbaby 200 long-range electro-optical surveillance system. It also features African Defence Systems’ AS4000 – an integrated battlefield management and fire control system developed specifically for indirect-fire applications.

A radar system supplied by Reutech complements the overall surveillance infrastructure to enable detection of both ground and airborne targets.

The AS4000 infrastructure connects the information required by command, observation, fire-control and launcher elements within a single digital environment. The architecture allows the coordinated flow of operational information between authorised system elements.

The wider AS4000 architecture also supports interfaces to data-communication devices, digital radios, launcher-control systems, muzzle-velocity equipment, meteorological systems, inertial-navigation systems and observer sensors with final interface architecture defined programmes.

The Tactical Observation Vehicle also has key capabilities to empower border management authorities with monitoring a country’s land borders for both vehicular and human incursions, says SVI business development director Nicol Louw.

“SVI’s new Tactical Observation Vehicle allows teams to operate autonomously for extended periods, all while providing the required tactical information. The combination of advanced battlefield-management systems, observation systems and a reliable Toyota platform ensures total operational readiness,” adds SVI CEO Jaco de Kock.

Upgraded Platform

The addition of another rear axle expands the platform’s carrying capacity and improves its off-road performance.

The Land Cruiser 79 Series single-cab donor vehicle can furthermore be optionally equipped with SVI’s field-proven Level B6 armouring package, which provides protection against common assault rifles including the AK47, R1 and R5.

The Tactical Observation Vehicle’s extended load area accommodates a dedicated box body, which includes an air-conditioning system, an 8 kW inverter and even a basic kitchen. This set-up can also accept an expanded solar PV system, if required.

Development of the platform started following a request by an African client to develop a light and highly mobile surveillance vehicle. Orders for the Tactical Observation Vehicle are already being fulfilled into Africa for a defence client, reports Louw.

SVI’s six-wheel Land Cruiser platforms can also be used to underpin a 6 X 6 ambulance solution and SVI’s MAX Recon platform under the “Light Mobile Brigade” banner.

“Modern defence operations require speed and adaptability, as well as firepower. And, as operational dynamics continue to shift, forces cannot afford to choose between agility and protection. The various ‘Light Mobile Brigade’ solutions showcased at AAD 2026 demonstrate our vision for the future of rapid deployment,” says De Kock.

AAD takes place from September 16 to 20 at Air Force Base Waterkloof, in the City of Tshwane.
